2K Games has welcomed Ben Brinkman from the creators of Apex Legends to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently crafting the anticipated third-person action-packed title known as Project Ethos.
Leadership Change Comes After Lukewarm Reception
The new appointee steps into the role of studio head at 31st Union following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was removed from his post due to Project Ethos' disappointing initial reveal last autumn.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified employees about this decision through an internal memo, which emphasized that playtesting had revealed the requirement for a clearer vision.
Ismailer noted that the developers is now refining the project with a revised vision, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
Trend of Key Hires
This announcement follows a comparable step taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the entire text from Ismailer's memo:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just finished your meeting - I hope you’re as thrilled as I am with the positive developments. Last time I sent you all a note, I mentioned the following: “I believe in this group. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the opportunity to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that partnership to persist.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, especially over the last year, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last fall’s the game playtest was informative. It affirmed the appeal of a action-packed game but told us we still had work to do. It uncovered the necessity for a clearer vision.
It’s been inspiring to see how far you’ve advanced. You accepted the input to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a refreshed direction - one that’s positioned to achieve its ambition to our players.
The belief in this project strengthens every day. To further the remarkable development you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the latest Studio Head of the team. Following several months of discussions, he starts with us on the specified date.
Ben’s leadership and background in the PVP shooter space is vast, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most well-known series in the industry, including Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
I invite you all in receiving him next week. We are all looking forward to persist observing the progress of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.
David
Experience of the Incoming Leader
The appointee presently holds the position of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. He previously worked at major gaming companies in various production roles on the iconic franchise series, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Details and Vision
Project Ethos was announced in last year alongside a public demo. Initially, 31st Union presented the title as a "free-to-play, third-person perspective roguelike hero shooter and an innovative advancement on the genre."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description reads. "Take on the rivals with unique powers, risks, and obstacles that shift every round. Do you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or go big, put it on the line, and hope your team can achieve the highest spot? The decision is in your hands."
Project Ethos has not yet received an official launch window or platforms, but fans can expect additional details as creation progresses.
